Layered Nature: Building a Macro Wildlife Scene

This project showcases a sequential editing workflow, where a single base image of a butterfly pea flower is enhanced step by step into a fully composed nature scene. Starting from a clean, unedited flower photo, a swallowtail butterfly was carefully composited onto the petal with matching color, light direction, and shadow placement. Further passes introduced fine details — subtle dew droplets on the petal surface and a warm, glowing sunlight flare in the background — to shift the mood toward a golden-hour atmosphere. In the final stage, a bee was added mid-flight near the flower, bringing additional motion and life to the composition. Each stage builds naturally on the last, demonstrating a controlled, non-destructive approach to layered compositing.

Challenge

The key challenge was maintaining visual consistency across every added element as the image grew more complex. The butterfly needed to sit convincingly on the curved petal surface with accurate shadow and perspective. Adding dew droplets required realistic light refraction and highlight placement to avoid looking artificial. Introducing the sun flare meant adjusting the overall color grading and contrast of the entire scene without disrupting the previously composited butterfly. Finally, integrating the bee in flight — with motion-appropriate blur and lighting matching the new golden tone — while keeping all earlier elements cohesive tested the flexibility of the layered workflow.

Outcome

The result is a five-stage transformation that turns a simple flower photo into an atmospheric, wildlife-rich macro scene. Each version stands as a believable, polished image on its own, while together they demonstrate a clear, iterative editing process — useful for showcasing compositing skill, lighting control, and attention to fine natural detail across progressive edits.
